Jan. 17, 2010 - Genesis 6

The first 7 verses of this chapter just don't seem to fit. It is really bizarre to read about the sons of god taking women. It really sounds like it comes from Greek mythology. The footnotes talk about how this is believed to be talking about the Phillistines and their origins because they w...ere known to be large people. Hense, Goliath is always pictured as a giant.

The story of the flood is one of those stories that jsut seems too big. I think it helps to understand where the writer may be coming from. When they say the world was flooded, realize what the world was to them. For most of human history the "known" world has not been the entire world. And as the footnotes say there are a lot of stories of a great flood in other civilizations. I remember back in high school or college we read a story from Native American history about a great flood where the sole survivor climbed a mountain and then a tree on top of the mountain. So, somewhere along the lines of human history there must have been some natural disaster that this spawns from. If you listen to Al Gore, we are heading in that direction again.
