Jan. 11, 2010 - Matthew 3

Fitting that we have this chapter the day after we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. So, did Jesus need to be baptised. Of course not. It was done as an example to us and because He wanted us to understand that He was going to humbly experience everything we experience.

The notes talk abou...t John being another Elijah, that is why he dressed the way he did. It was thought that Elijah would return before the Messiah. Jews would know this. Once again we see Matthew writing specifically to them in describing what John wore it is a another sign pointing to Jesus as the one they have been waiting for.

We also, in the Baptism scene, get our first sense of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I am slways a little thrown off by the language used by God when talking about or to Jesus. If they are so connected, it seems unecessary. But it was not for Jesus. Like with everything, it was done for the people present and for us. Jesus didn't need anything. It was all for us.
